Auditions FAQs

What do auditions look like and what do I need to prepare?

Auditions are made up of three parts:

  1. A range check, where we see how high and low you can sing
  2. A pitch matching exercise, where we play a few notes and you repeat them back to us
  3. Your solo, where you sing (or beatbox) a verse and chorus of a song of your choice

To prepare for auditions, select and practice your solo song until you're feeling ready to blow us away!

Can I audition for multiple groups?

In a word, yes! You can audition for as many groups as you want, and it's encouraged to explore your options so that you end up in the right place for you.

Will other people be in the room during my audition?

During auditions, only current members and a single auditonee are in the room. If you'd like to bring a friend for support, though, you are more than welcome to!

What are callbacks like?

During callbacks, you will receive two songs from our rep and learn your voice part for each with the help of current members. Then, we'll sing it as a group! Different auditionees will rotate out of their voice part to sing the solo line. This allows us to hear how you blend with a group as well as your abilities as a soloist. Unlike auditions, everyone with a callback is in the room to support one another's performances. After the singing, we get to know everyone better by mingling over pizza and other treats!

How do I pick my audition song?

Picking an audition song can be tricky! The most important thing to keep in mind is showcasing your vocal strengths. Whether it's a powerful belt, angelic high range, or face-melting runs, we want to hear them, so make sure your song includes your unique strength.

UAR performs a range of genres, but we tend to lean towards pop overall, which is good to keep in mind when selecting a song. For some song inspiration, check out our '25 Spring Concert videos here

Any advice?

Auditions can be nerve-wracking! Feeling intimidated is completely valid, but it helps to remember that every returning member has been in your position at some point. Try not to be too hard on yourself--every mistake you might make, we've made dozens of times over!
